What is the GMAT?

The GMAT Focus Edition launched in November 2023 as a major overhaul. It dropped Sentence Correction and the Analytical Writing section, replacing them with a new Data Insights section. The test is shorter, fully digital, and lets you choose the order of sections. If you're using old GMAT prep materials, throw them out — the test is fundamentally different now.

Test Format & Sections

Quantitative Reasoning (45 minutes, 21 questions)

Problem solving only — no more Data Sufficiency in this section. Covers arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and word problems.

Verbal Reasoning (45 minutes, 23 questions)

Reading comprehension and Critical Reasoning only. Sentence Correction has been removed entirely.

Data Insights (45 minutes, 20 questions)

The new section. Combines data interpretation with analytical reasoning. Includes Data Sufficiency (moved from Quant), Multi-Source Reasoning, Table Analysis, Graphics Interpretation, and Two-Part Analysis.

Scoring

Total score: 205–805 (replaces the old 200–800 scale). Each section scored separately. Most top MBA programs look for 655+ (equivalent to the old 700+). The median score is around 535.
