PMP Exam Guide (New July 2026 Exam)

The Project Management Professional (PMP) is PMI's flagship certification for people who lead projects. It shows up in job postings across IT, construction, healthcare, government and consulting. It is not an entry-level credential: PMI wants documented experience leading projects before you're allowed to sit.

Earlier in your career? PMI's CAPM is the entry-level option, and an active CAPM also satisfies the PMP's 35-hour training requirement.

The exam tests judgment more than memorization. Most questions put you in a situation — a conflict on the team, a vendor missing dates, a sponsor with unrealistic expectations — and ask what you should do. The best answer is the one that matches PMI's view of good practice, which is why the official content outline matters more than memorizing formulas.

PMI switched the PMP to a new Examination Content Outline (ECO) in July 2026. If you test now, you're taking the new version. The shifts that matter most:

• Business Environment jumped from 8% to 26%. Governance, compliance, change control, risk, issues and organizational change now carry real weight.
• More agile and hybrid. About 40% of items represent predictive approaches; the other 60% are split between adaptive/agile and hybrid.
• New topics. The outline explicitly adds artificial intelligence and sustainability, and it frames project success around stakeholder value and outcomes — not just on time and on budget.
• New item types. Case or scenario questions and graphic-based questions that make you interpret charts or visuals.
• 26 tasks instead of 35, reorganized across the same three domains.
• Ten more minutes: 240 minutes for 180 questions, up from 230.

PMI's outline also describes "practicum" items that may include tools, data and case study questions. In plain terms: expect to read scenarios, tables and charts, not just one-line questions.

These are the task names from PMI's 2026 Examination Content Outline. Each task in the ECO comes with enablers — examples of the work involved. Read them; they're the closest thing the PMP has to a syllabus.

You get pass or fail, plus feedback on how you performed in each domain. PMI does not publish a passing percentage or a set number of questions you must get right, and the 10 pretest questions don't count toward your result. Anyone quoting an exact "PMP passing score" is guessing.

What that means for practice: don't chase a magic number. Aim to be solid in all three domains, because a weak Business Environment score can now drag you down far more than it could under the old 8% weighting. You also need 35 hours of project management training, or an active CAPM. "Experience" means time you actually managed projects — taking responsibility for planning, decisions, delivery and outcomes — and PMI asks you to list each project separately in the application. Write those descriptions in PMI's language (initiating, planning, leading, delivering, closing), and be specific.

PMI charges PMI members a lower exam fee than non-members. Before you apply, compare the member discount with the cost of membership on PMI's site. Fees change, so check the current amounts on PMI's PMP page instead of trusting a number from an old blog post.

1. Confirm eligibility and finish your 35 training hours (or have an active CAPM).
2. Apply online with PMI, listing each project and describing your role.
3. Pay and schedule once your application is approved. PMI's site lists the current test delivery options.
4. Test within your eligibility period: you get one year and up to three attempts.

If you can put in 8–10 hours a week, plan on roughly 8–10 weeks. Adjust after your diagnostic — experienced agile practitioners and career predictive PMs have very different gaps.

1. Week 1 — map the target. Read the new ECO start to finish, then take our practice test as a diagnostic.
2. Weeks 2–5 — learn by domain. Work through one current prep book or course that says it's aligned to the July 2026 exam. Use the PMBOK Guide 8th edition as a reference, not a cover-to-cover read. Give Business Environment real time; most older study habits underweight it.
3. Weeks 6–8 — practice under pressure. Do mixed question sets daily and at least two full-length timed runs (180 questions, 240 minutes). For every miss, write down which ECO task it belongs to and why the right answer beats the one you picked.
4. Final week — tighten up. Review your miss log, drill formulas (earned value, float, communication channels, EMV), and rest before test day.

Many PMP questions have two answers that sound fine. These habits usually separate them:

• Understand before acting. Assess the impact, talk to the person, or check the plan before escalating, replanning or changing anything.
• Go direct, then escalate. Conflicts and problems are handled with the people involved first; the sponsor is not your first call.
• Follow the process. Changes to baselines go through change control, even "small" ones, and even when a senior stakeholder asks.
• Serve the team. In agile settings, coach, remove impediments and protect focus rather than assigning tasks.
• Value over output. The new outline cares whether deliverables produce outcomes, not just whether they ship.
• Compliance isn't optional. Data privacy, AI use policies, safety records and regulations beat speed every time.

At 240 minutes for 180 questions, you have about 80 seconds per question — but case studies and chart questions take longer than one-line items, so bank time on the quick ones. A simple checkpoint plan: roughly 60 questions done by the 80-minute mark, 120 by the 160-minute mark, and the rest in the final 80 minutes. Take both breaks; a few minutes away from the screen usually pays for itself in the last third. Flag anything that's eating more than two minutes, pick your best answer, and come back to it if time allows.
