How we picked

Picks are based on publisher-listed contents, alignment with the current official ACT format (the enhanced ACT used for all national testing since September 2025), and edition currency. This isn't based on testing every book. We list only titles whose current edition and contents we could confirm from the publisher. For now, that means ACT's own books. We don't show star ratings or prices, and no publisher paid for placement.

Is your book updated for the enhanced ACT? The 60-second check

The ACT changed a lot in 2025, and older editions are still everywhere, especially used copies. Before you buy (or open) any ACT book, flip to a practice test and check:

CheckEnhanced ACT (current)Legacy ACT (outdated)
English section50 questions, 35 min75 questions, 45 min
Math section45 questions, 50 min, 4 choices60 questions, 60 min, 5 choices
Reading section36 questions, 40 min40 questions, 35 min
ScienceOptional, not in compositeRequired, in composite

If a book fails the check, it can still teach you grammar rules and algebra. But its timed practice will train the wrong pace, and its score conversions won't match today's test.

About the official guide: the 2026–2027 edition is ACT's current guide. ACT's product description lists four full-length tests, each with the optional writing test, but it doesn't spell out section lengths. When you open it, run the check above on the first practice test before timing yourself.

What about Princeton Review, Kaplan, and Barron’s?

Big test-prep publishers often put out new ACT editions, and some are good for extra strategy and drills. We haven't listed specific third-party titles because we couldn't confirm their current editions and contents from the publishers. If you buy one:

  • Buy the newest edition year and run the 60-second check above.
  • Treat third-party practice tests as drills, not score predictors. Only official ACT tests use real ACT questions and scoring.
  • Don't buy more than one comprehensive book. One guide plus official practice tests is plenty for most students.

Which book should you buy? Match it to your situation

Your situationWhat to get
First time prepping, 8+ weeks outThe Official ACT Prep Guide, plus ACT's free practice tests
One section is 3+ points behind the othersThe prep guide plus that section's official subject guide
Taking optional science for a STEM programThe prep guide plus the Official ACT Science Guide
Test is under 4 weeks awayNo new book. Use free official tests and our practice tests, and drill your weakest category.
Tight budgetFree official practice first. If you buy one thing, buy the prep guide.

A simple 8-week plan with the official guide

  1. Week 1: Take practice test 1 under enhanced timing. Log every miss by category.
  2. Weeks 2–4: Study the chapters for your two weakest areas. Do untimed practice sets, then timed single sections.
  3. Week 5: Take practice test 2. Compare category by category with test 1.
  4. Weeks 6–7: Re-drill whatever didn't improve. Add a subject guide here only if one section is stuck.
  5. Week 8: Take practice tests 3 and 4, a few days apart, in full test-day conditions.

How to get your money’s worth

  1. Don't read it cover to cover. Take one practice test first, then read only the chapters for your weakest categories.
  2. Save two full tests for the last three weeks so you have fresh, official material for timed final checks.
  3. Time everything at enhanced-ACT pace: 35 minutes for English, 50 for math, 40 for reading, 40 for science if you're taking it.
  4. Time your online access. ACT lists one year of online question-bank access for each subject guide, so don't activate a code months before you'll study.
  5. Keep an error log (question, why you missed it, the fix). It's worth more than a second book.

Try free official practice before you buy

ACT offers free full-length practice tests (including science and writing) and a free 2025|2026 practice test booklet. Take one, look at where you lost points, and buy only what fixes that. For the full test overview, see our ACT guide, and for dates, our 2026–27 ACT test dates.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best ACT prep book for 2026–27?

The Official ACT Prep Guide 2026–2027. It's ACT's own guide, with four full-length official practice tests and explanations. Everything else is a supplement.

Is the Official ACT Prep Guide updated for the enhanced ACT?

The 2026–2027 edition is ACT's current guide. ACT's product description lists four full-length tests with the optional writing test but doesn't list section lengths, so check the first practice test: enhanced-format tests have 50 English questions and 45 four-choice math questions.

Can I use an older edition of an ACT prep book?

For content review, mostly yes, since grammar and algebra haven't changed. For timed practice, no. Legacy editions have 75-question English sections, five-choice math, and required science, which trains the wrong pacing.

Do I need the ACT subject guides?

Only for a section that's clearly behind the others. Most students need the prep guide plus free official practice tests. Add one subject guide for your weakest section if you want more official questions on it.

Are third-party ACT practice tests accurate?

They're useful for drilling skills, but only official ACT tests use real questions and real score conversions. Use third-party tests for practice and official tests for score checks.
