How we picked
Picks are based on publisher-listed contents, alignment with PMI's July 2026 Examination Content Outline, and edition currency — not our own testing of every book. We only call something "updated for the July 2026 exam" when the publisher says so. Where a publisher's wording is vaguer than that, we quote it and let you judge. We don't list prices because they change constantly.
Why the edition matters more than usual in 2026
The new exam went live in July 2026 with a new content outline. Materials written for the old outline teach the wrong blueprint:
| Old outline (until July 2026) | New outline (since July 2026) | |
|---|---|---|
| Domain weights | People 42%, Process 50%, Business Environment 8% | People 33%, Process 41%, Business Environment 26% |
| Tasks | 35 | 26 |
| Approach mix | About half predictive | About 40% predictive, 60% agile/hybrid |
A quick test: flip to the book's exam overview. If it shows 42/50/8, it's the old exam. PMI also published the PMBOK Guide – Eighth Edition in November 2025, so prep books that reference only the 7th edition are almost certainly pre-change.
Quick picks by situation
| If you… | Start with |
|---|---|
| Want one book that teaches the whole exam | Rita Mulcahy's PMP Exam Prep, 12th Edition, plus the free ECO |
| Already know the material and need reps | A large simulator such as RMC's, plus our free practice test as a baseline |
| Keep getting tripped up by PMI terminology | The PMBOK Guide – Eighth Edition as a lookup reference |
| Want practice from the exam owner | PMI Study Hall (check what's included first) |
| Are on a tight budget | The free ECO, our practice test, and one current prep book |
What you actually need
Don't buy a shelf. For most candidates, three things are enough:
- The ECO (free) — your blueprint and checklist.
- One current prep guide or course that covers all 26 tasks across predictive, agile and hybrid approaches.
- One large question bank or simulator for timed, full-length practice.
The PMBOK Guide is a reference. Look things up in it; don't try to memorize it.
Update status at a glance
| Resource | Aligned to July 2026 exam? | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| PMI Examination Content Outline | Yes — it defines the exam | PMI's July 2026 exam update |
| PMBOK Guide – Eighth Edition | Current standard (Nov 2025); not an exam-prep book | PMI standards page |
| Rita Mulcahy's PMP Exam Prep, 12th Edition | Publisher says "fully updated to match the latest exam content" | RMC Learning Solutions site; also cites the PMP ECO and PMBOK Guide 8 |
| RMC PMP Exam Simulator | Not explicitly dated by the publisher; covers all three domains, tasks and enablers | RMC product page |
| PMI Study Hall | PMI's own prep tool; check PMI for current version details | PMI PMP page |
Check the agile and hybrid coverage
About 60% of the new exam's items involve adaptive/agile or hybrid approaches. That's the second thing to check in any prep material, right after the edition. A good resource should explain, with scenarios, how a project manager behaves differently on an agile team (coaching, protecting the sprint, working through the product owner) versus a predictive project (baselines, change control boards, earned value) — and how the two combine on hybrid projects.
Also look for coverage of the topics the new outline added or expanded: AI use and policy, sustainability, benefits and value delivery, governance and compliance. If a book's index doesn't mention them, it wasn't written for this exam.
How to get the most out of a prep book
- Diagnose first. Take a practice test before chapter 1 so you know which domains to read closely and which to skim.
- Read with the ECO open. After each chapter, check which of the 26 tasks it covered and whether you could explain each enabler to a coworker.
- Do the chapter questions right away, then again a week later. Spacing beats rereading.
- Keep a miss log. For each wrong answer, note the task, the answer you chose, and the principle that makes the right answer better. Review it every few days.
- Finish with timed practice. Books teach; simulators build the 240-minute stamina the real exam demands.
What to skip
- "Brain dumps" claiming to be real PMP questions. They violate PMI's rules and are usually wrong anyway.
- Anything citing a PMP "passing score" percentage. PMI doesn't publish one, so the author is guessing.
- Stacking three or four books. You'll spend your time reconciling explanations instead of practicing. One guide and one question bank, done thoroughly, beats a pile done halfway.

ReadFrequently asked questions
Is Rita Mulcahy’s book updated for the new PMP exam?
RMC describes the 12th edition as "fully updated to match the latest exam content" and says it integrates concepts from the PMP ECO and PMBOK Guide 8. Earlier editions were written for the old outline.
Do I need to read the whole PMBOK Guide?
No. The exam follows the Examination Content Outline, not a single book. Use the PMBOK Guide – Eighth Edition as a reference for PMI's terms and framework.
Can I pass with free resources only?
Some people do, but you'll still need the 35 hours of training to apply, and a large bank of realistic practice questions is hard to find for free. Start with PMI's free outline and our practice test, then decide what to pay for.
How do I tell if a book is for the old PMP exam?
Check its exam overview. The old outline used People 42%, Process 50%, Business Environment 8% and 35 tasks. The new one uses 33%, 41% and 26% with 26 tasks.
