First: match the book to your exam code

Security+ is mid-transition. SY0-701 is the current exam, and it retires in English on June 11, 2027. Security+ V8 (expected code SY0-801) is expected on or around November 17, 2026. Every book below is a 701 edition. If you're testing on 701, those are the right books. If you've decided to take V8, wait for the V8 editions. A 701 book won't match the new objectives, and publishers usually release updated editions around a new exam's launch.

Watch out for SY0-601 editions still floating around marketplaces. They're for a retired exam with different domains. Check the exam code on the cover before you buy.

How we picked

Picks are based on publisher-listed contents, alignment with the current SY0-701 objectives and domain names, and edition currency. We haven't worked through every book cover to cover, so we're not pretending otherwise. No book on this page paid for placement, and we don't list prices because they change constantly. Official CompTIA material comes first because it's written by the exam owner against its own objectives.

How to choose (and how many to buy)

You need two things: one primary study guide that covers every objective, and a big pool of practice questions with explanations. That's it.

  • Want the exam owner's framing? Start with the official CompTIA guide.
  • Want depth and a big question bank? The Sybex study guide or the All-in-One are the classic comprehensive picks.
  • Want a plainer, more readable explanation of tricky topics? Get Certified Get Ahead has a loyal following for its clear style.
  • Already studied and just need reps? A dedicated practice-test book is the best value.

Whatever you buy, keep the official SY0-701 objectives open next to it and check off every bullet. Books differ in emphasis, and the objectives are the only definitive list.

Mistakes to avoid when buying Security+ books

  • Buying the wrong exam code. A cheap used SY0-601 book isn't a bargain. It's the wrong exam.
  • Buying three study guides. They cover the same objectives. Put that money toward practice questions instead.
  • Skipping practice under time pressure. Reading feels productive, but the exam runs about a minute per question. Timed practice is what exposes shaky knowledge.
  • Relying only on books for PBQs. Pair your reading with small lab exercises, like writing firewall rules, reading logs and generating certificates. Performance-based questions reward doing, not just recognizing.
  • Trusting “real exam question” dumps. They violate CompTIA's candidate agreement, they're often wrong, and they teach you to memorize instead of reason.

A simple book-based study plan

  1. Take our free timed practice test first to see where you stand by domain.
  2. Read your primary guide in objective order, and spend extra time on Security Operations (28%) and Threats, Vulnerabilities, and Mitigations (22%).
  3. After each chapter, do its review questions and write down every concept you missed.
  4. In the last two weeks, switch to timed practice exams at one minute per question, and study every explanation.
  5. Retake our practice test cold near the end to confirm your weak domains have closed.

New to the exam? Start with the full Security+ guide for format, scoring and the V8 timeline.

Free complements to any book

Two free resources belong next to whatever book you pick. First, the official SY0-701 exam objectives from CompTIA's Security+ V7 page. They're the definitive checklist, and every book is an interpretation of them. Second, timed practice: our free Security+ practice test runs 45 original questions at real pace, with PBQ-style items first and explanations for every answer.

Frequently asked questions

Which Security+ book is best for beginners?

Pick a full study guide over a practice-test book. The official CompTIA guide and Get Certified Get Ahead both suit people newer to security. Pair either one with plenty of practice questions.

Can I use a SY0-601 book for SY0-701?

Don't. The domains were reorganized for 701, and 601 books cover a retired blueprint. Save the money and buy a 701 edition.

Should I buy a 701 book now if V8 is coming?

Only if you plan to test on 701, which is available in English until June 11, 2027. If you're taking V8, wait for books built on the V8 objectives.

Do I need more than one book?

Usually one primary guide plus a practice-question source is enough. Buying three study guides mostly buys you the same content three times.

Are official CompTIA materials worth it over third-party books?

The official guide's advantage is alignment: it's written by the exam owner against its own objectives. Third-party guides often add more practice questions or a different teaching style. Many people pair one official or third-party guide with a separate practice-question source.

When will SY0-801 books come out?

Publishers typically release new editions around a new exam's launch, and CompTIA expects V8 on or around November 17, 2026. Check the exam code on the cover, and don't pre-buy a V8 book until you've seen its contents.
