How we picked
Our picks are based on three things: what each publisher says is inside (practice tests, question counts, online extras), how closely the material lines up with the current ATI TEAS Version 7 format, and whether the edition is current. We didn't sit down and work through every page of every book, so we don't pretend to rate them on page-level quality โ and we don't use star ratings.
Official ATI products come first because ATI writes the TEAS. Third-party books are worth adding for extra practice, but no one else has access to real TEAS questions.
Which one should you get?
- You want one book: the official ATI TEAS Study Guide. It covers all four sections, uses ATI's own terminology and sub-content areas, and includes end-of-section quizzes.
- You want to know if you're ready: ATI's online practice tests (Practice Tests A and B). They come from the test maker and include rationales, which makes them the most reliable readiness check you can buy.
- You need someone to teach you, not just test you: ATI SmartPrep, which adapts lessons and practice to your weak areas.
- You study in short bursts on your phone: the ATI TEAS prep app. There's a free version, so try it before you pay.
- You want more practice volume: a third-party guide such as Mometrix's ATI TEAS 7 Secrets, which advertises multiple full-length practice tests and a big question bank.
Official vs. third-party TEAS books
ATI's materials have one big advantage: they're built on the same blueprint as the exam, so the topics, vocabulary, and question styles match what you'll see. The downside is volume. If you burn through the official practice quickly, you'll want more questions.
Third-party publishers fill that gap with more practice tests and questions. The trade-off is that their questions are written by people who have never seen a real TEAS item, so difficulty and style can drift โ sometimes easier, sometimes harder and more obscure than the real thing. Use them for reps, and use ATI's practice tests to judge whether you're ready.
Check the version before you buy. Older TEAS books (TEAS 6 and earlier) are still floating around used. The current exam is ATI TEAS Version 7, which includes alternate item types โ multiple-select, fill-in-the-blank, ordered response, and hot spot questions. Make sure any book you buy was written for Version 7.
What a good TEAS 7 book has to include
Whatever you buy, flip to the table of contents and check for these before you commit:
- All four sections in the right proportions. Science should be the biggest part of the book, with anatomy and physiology getting the most pages. A book that spends 100 pages on reading strategy and 40 on body systems has its priorities backward.
- The current sub-content areas. Look for ATI's language โ Key Ideas and Details, Numbers and Algebra, Scientific Reasoning, Conventions of Standard English, and so on. It's a quick tell that the book was built for Version 7.
- Alternate item types. Practice with select-all-that-apply, fill-in-the-blank, and ordered-response questions, not just four-choice multiple choice. Multiple-select questions have no partial credit, so you need reps on them.
- Timed, full-length practice tests with answer explanations, not just an answer key. An explanation that tells you why the tempting wrong answer is wrong is worth more than ten extra unexplained questions.
- Math without a personal calculator. The TEAS has a built-in calculator, and you can't bring your own, so practice the way you'll test.
How to actually use a TEAS study guide
- Take a diagnostic first. Our free TEAS practice test is full-length โ 170 questions in 209 minutes, like the real exam โ and shows your weakest sub-content areas. Don't read a 400-page book cover to cover when you only need three chapters.
- Start with Science. Human Anatomy and Physiology is tied for the largest sub-content area on the exam (18 scored questions) and it's the hardest to fake. Work through it body system by body system.
- Do every end-of-chapter quiz under time pressure. Reading gives you roughly 73 seconds per question, and English gives you just 60.
- Log your misses. Write down the topic and why you missed it โ content gap, misread question, or careless error. The fixes are different.
- Finish with a full-length timed test, sections in the real order, with the 10-minute break after Math.
Try the free stuff first
Before you spend anything, use what's free: ATI's free online practice test (see ATI's guide to preparing for the TEAS for how to access it), the free version of its TEAS prep app (on ATI's TEAS prep page), and our free TEAS practice test. Also ask your school whether it recommends or provides specific prep resources.

ReadFrequently asked questions
What is the best book for the TEAS?
For most people, the official ATI TEAS Study Guide, because ATI writes the exam and the guide follows the same blueprint. Pair it with ATI's online practice tests to check your readiness.
Is the official ATI study guide enough to pass the TEAS?
For many students, yes โ especially combined with ATI's practice tests. If your science background is weak or you need more practice volume, add a third-party book or tutorial.
Are TEAS 6 books still useful?
Not as your main resource. The current exam is ATI TEAS Version 7, which has a different blueprint and alternate question types. Old books may cover similar content but won't match the current format.
How long should I study with a TEAS prep book?
ATI says most candidates study for several weeks. Six weeks at about an hour a day is a reasonable plan if your science classes were recent; allow more if they weren't.
Do third-party TEAS books use real TEAS questions?
No. Real TEAS questions are secure. Third-party books write their own questions to imitate the exam, which is why ATI's official practice tests are the best readiness check.
